Sorry for the late response! I've been thinking about this, too, and I think you have your finger on something - in the books I loved, the story was always that the girl had done something bad, so she was going to school (unwillingly!) to be "fixed". But often, the fixing wasn't just about sorting herself out, it was about coming to terms with the people around her.

Also: food. How come boarding school food was supposed to be so good, when comprehensive food was awful? :)
