'Scuse me while I rant

I'm about five-eights of the way through AS Byatt's The Children's Book, which I am finding nuanced and extremely engrossing. However, I just need to get the following out of my system.
Argh, I am so frustrated with all these poor turn-of-the-century girls who are being encouraged to question society's mores and end up doing so by sleeping with creepy old men and getting pregnant for their trouble! And where are all the nice, well-meaning boys of their own generation? Educating themselves by sleeping with prostitutes so they don't "sully" girls of their own class, while their father figures are doing it for them.
Ugh. Argh. *steams*
Oof. Points to anyone who can guess the bit I've just read. :P
